They sleep in hovels, without electricity or running water. Bulgarian harvest laborers work in southern Italy under appalling conditions. People are even dying on the fields. Most of Italy's tomatoes, oranges and artichokes are picked by more than 500,000 harvest laborers from Africa and Eastern Europe. Many work under conditions that GCIL, Italy's biggest labor federation, calls modern slavery.
