Lebanon was once known as the 'Switzerland of the Middle East'. That's certainly not the case today. The civil war in Syria has spilled over into Lebanon. There are more than one million Syrian refugees in Lebanon right now; they make up nearly one fifth of the country's current population. Lebanon has the world's highest ratio of refugees to host-country population. The influx of refugees has pushed Lebanon's economic and social resources to the limit, and threatens to upset the fragile balance among the country's religious communities.
